Butterfly – Bhutan Glory (Bhutanitis lidderdalii)

The Bhutan Glory (Bhutanitis lidderdalii) appears here in elegant detail, its long-tailed hindwings and bold pattern of orange, black, and cream shown with crisp colour and precision. Native to the eastern Himalayas and neighbouring regions, it is among the world’s most spectacular swallowtails. The species ranges through Bhutan, northeast India, northern Myanmar, and into southern China and Indochina, inhabiting ridges and high forest slopes between 1,500 and 2,700 metres. Adults glide slowly along treetops or drift across hilltops in a graceful, unpredictable flight.

Discovered in the 19th century and now protected across much of its range, the Bhutan Glory is a specialist feeder whose larvae rely exclusively on Aristolochia vines. These plants make both caterpillars and adults distasteful to predators. The species typically produces one or two broods per year, and adults may live for several months — unusually long for a butterfly. When resting, they flatten their wings to conceal the orange markings, blending seamlessly into the forest canopy. Elusive and rarely seen close-up, the Bhutan Glory remains a prized sight for naturalists and a symbol of Himalayan biodiversity and conservation.

It’s a visual field guide reimagined—clean, bold forms and carefully tuned palettes that bring structure to the surface.

Each piece begins with the research-led drawings from the book and then goes further: refined linework, rebalanced composition, and subtle textural detailing designed for generous print sizes. The aim is clarity and presence — images that feel scientifically grounded yet striking on the wall. Printed with the same archival care as our other series, Bugs turns natural history into crisp, enduring graphic art.

Our Bugs series is produced in collaboration with specialist fine-art printing partners using museum-grade 250 gsm archival giclée paper.

Each print is made to order with exceptional precision and colour accuracy, using pigment-based inks for long-term stability and rich tonal depth.

Prints are carefully rolled in acid-free tissue and shipped in rigid cardboard tubes to ensure they arrive in perfect condition, ready for framing.
